Father & Son Gauchos

Our house in Areco

Pirulin

On the 11Th November Argentina celebrates its gaucho traditions in a festival called Dia De la Tradicion.

On the weekend we went to San Antonio De Areco. Our bus was late so the caretaker of the house we were staying at didn't think we would come so she left. We had to wait and wait and wait in the pouring rain. Sofia and I climbed the fence so we were nice and dry but my mum and Lucia were soaking wet, I felt sorry for them. Then the caretaker came and showed us the house. We went out because the rain had stopped. We went for lunch then to the festival where there were rodeos with horses, races with horses and almost everthing with horses.

The next day there was a parade in the plaza of all the gauchos and horses that competed in the events.

My favourite part about Dia de la Tradicion was the horse rodeo.

Ollie,
Are they ice blocks or lollipops?
I've never seen anything like that before.
I hope the gaucho was OK after his accident.

A pirulin is a lollipop, like a long pointy toffee on a stick.
They are apparently called ¨pirulin" because the noise of the street seller's whistle!
The gaucho was very macho... he was thrown by the horse and then the horse fell on top of him. He was knocked out and they called for an ambulance but he refused to be looked at when he came to. He stood up and walked proudly off the field amid cheers from the crowd. Tough stuff these gauchos!
